What to Consider Before Starting a Solar Installation Project

A solar installation is a long-term asset, not a purchase. Getting the specification and the installation right first time matters more than shaving the equipment cost.

Solar projects are frequently evaluated on capital cost per kilowatt. That figure is easy to compare and easy to mislead with. Output, reliability and service life depend on decisions made well before a panel is mounted.

Start with the load, not the array

The system should be sized against what it will actually supply. That means an honest assessment of base load, peak demand, daily consumption profile and how much of the load must be served when the grid is unavailable.

Oversizing an array against a load that cannot use it produces energy that is curtailed or exported at an unfavourable rate. Undersizing produces an installation that never meets its intended purpose.

Specification decisions that dominate outcomes

  • Inverter selection and topology. Central, string or hybrid — each has different implications for yield, resilience and future expansion.
  • Storage sizing and chemistry. Battery capacity is not the same as usable capacity, and depth of discharge affects service life.
  • Mounting and structural loading. Roof condition, fixing method and wind loading are engineering questions, not accessories.
  • Protection and isolation. Earthing, surge protection and safe isolation determine whether the system can be maintained safely.

Installation quality is not visible afterwards

Most failures trace back to workmanship rather than equipment: incorrect torquing, poor cable management, inadequate weatherproofing, bypassed protection. Once the array is energised these are hidden — until they are not.

Insist on a commissioning record: test results, string performance measurements, protection settings and as-built documentation.

Plan for the operating phase

A solar asset needs monitoring, cleaning, periodic inspection and eventual component replacement. Ask who will do that, what it costs and how performance will be reported. A system designed without a maintenance plan is a system designed to degrade quietly.

If you are evaluating a solar project, the specification and installation plan matter more than the equipment brand. Both should be reviewable before contracts are signed.
